Set off the coast of Cape Cod, the movie recounts the events that unfolded when two oil tankers, the SS Pendleton and the SS Fort Mercer, were torn apart by a fierce storm.
As chaos ensues and the tankers' crews struggle to survive in treacherous waters, a small group of Coast Guardsmen, led by Bernie Webber, take on the seemingly impossible task of rescuing the stranded sailors. With limited resources and facing extreme weather conditions, the Coast Guard team battles towering waves and icy ocean currents in their tiny lifeboat.
